Crawford Coat of Arms
Around the year 1100, people in Scotland began to assume surnames as in family names. Previous to this a person was known by a given name and then some pecuriarity about the person, a job, title or office held, was added. Scotch families almost always took the name from the land or barony they had settled. In some way thought to be connected to the River and a ford discovered there apon by Mackonack, a grandson of the Duke of Brittany, while fighting on the side of the Scotch. His victory there earned him a grant to the land which became Creeford and finally Crawford.

Young, Box 129, Liberty, S.C., Feb., 1953, Vol 1, No. 11

Notes for BERTHA CONAN:
Bertha was the daughter/heiress of Conan, reigning Duke of Brittany. The History of the Crawford Family, published in Our Ancestors: Editor: Miss Pauline Young, Box 129 Liberty S.C., Jan., 1953, Vol 1, No. 10 gives her lineage

Bertha was the great granddaughter of William the Conqueror and his wife Mathilda, daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders, who was 5th in Descent from Ethelwida, daughter of Alfred the great, and 10th in descent from Charlemagne. Comparing the Crawford Coat-of-arms with the one of Brittany bears out this claim.

Reginald received in the 12th Century, extensive grants of land from David I of Scotland in Strath Cluyd of Clydesdale, where his immediate Descendants adopted the name of Crawford, then forming one of the
largest baronies Of Scotland."

All the genealogists agree that the following are direct ancestors of The Crawford family, but they do not agree with Clements that they are of The maternal line: Swain (Swane, called Succonus) was the son of Thor Longus, Lord of Tippermuir and superior Lord of the lands of Crawford in Upper Clydesdale, who settled in Scotland between 1069 - 1074. The grandfather Of Swain was Leofwine, born not later than
1000 and lived in Northumberland England.

Taken from Stephen's' Crawford Genealogy by Mrs. Lucinda Frances. Because in 1127 "Reginald beat back the enemies of King David I, of Scotland, at the ford of a stream in the old Roman road about three miles from Kilbirnie, the King bestowed upon him the name and title of Earl of Cruford. Alexander, being the younger son of Malcolm, did not inherit lands like his older brother, John. Sometime after Kilbirnie was broken in to and his father's death in 1595, he removed along with many friends and relatives to the County of Donegal in northern Ireland, a part of "The Colonization of Ulster", in 1610. He became the owner of a ship, trading goods between Ireland and Scotland. It is uncertain whether he came with his uncle, Sir John Cunningham and his cousins, or whether he followed later establishing his shipping trade when he found family and friends in Donegal. It is believed that the grant of lands in Donegal (known as the Portlough Patent) was organized by the Duke of Lennox, Ludovic Stuart, who was held in great esteem by King James VI or I of England. Stuart was related in many ways to the Crawfords by blood or marriage

Notes for COLONEL WILLIAM CRAWFORD:
William was a farmer and surveyor in Frederick Co., VA. He enlisted in the British Army along with his brother Valentine Crawford, Jr., at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA in 1754. His first appointment was made by George Washington in 1755, as an ensign in a company of scouts under the command of Christopher Gist. His time was divided between the military, farming, and civil affairs. He moved from Frederick Co., VA to what is now Fayette Co., PA, in the spring of 1766.

Enlisted in British Army at Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia, 1754.

Colonel William Crawford led the ill-fated expedition against the Sandusky Indians.

                             From the Collins/Stoner family history:

"In the spring of the year 1782 the Indians became very numerous and
marauding bands were giving the   settlers no end of trouble.
An appeal to Fort Pitt was made for soldiers to help chase them out.
A company of volunteers was raised and placed under the command of Col.
William Crawford.  The regular soldiers assisted by the volunteers rove the
Indian bands across the Ohio River and north through Ohio.  The Indians kept
retreating until they reached northern Ohio, where they were met by a large
supporting band of French and Indians.
Scouts reported that they were greatly outnumbered and a retreat was
ordered, whereupon some of the volunteers became panicky and Col. Crawford
and nine of his men were cut off and captured.   Among this group was Dr.
Knight, a short muscular man from Bullskin Twp.    These men were divided
between various bands of Indians, who either killed them or tortured them to
death.   Crawford and Knight were kept together for a time and Knight was a
witness to Crawford's fate.
The Indians first bound Crawford's hands, with leather thongs with the
other end tied to a state leaving a short length which would allow a few
turns of travel around.   He was then shot at with guns at short range
loaded only with powder until his naked body was blistered from head to
foot.
He was then driven around one way then back by the Indiana squaws who
showered him with red hot wood cinders until he was wading in fiery coals.
Occasionally an Indian would slash him with a knife.
During this ordeal, Simon Gerty, the renegade half breed Indian trader,
sat on his horse close by.   Crawford seeing him implored him to shoot him
to end his misery but Gerty only laughed and refused to interfere.
When completely exhausted Crawford fell flat in the burning cinders
when an Indian rushed to him, ran his knife around his head, then holding
his knife between his teeth tore Crawford's scalp from his head.   There,
completely exhausted, smothered in cinders, death relieved his sufferings.
It is recorded that his death too place on June 10, 1782 in the valley
of the Tamooche Creek, near Sandusky, Ohio.

Dr. Knight was more lucky, as with hands tied he was being taken to
another camp for a similar fate by two Indians, one of them having been
wounded but still able to travel.   The night being chilly, they decided to
build a fire to roast some meat.   Knight was able to work his thongs loose
but waited for a chance to get his captors off guard.   When the fire was
burning well and the Indian was tending the meat Dr. Knight went into action
by grabbing a burning stick and driving it into the Indiana's body, thereby
putting him temporarily out of normal action.   He then made a break for
liberty.   One Indian grabbed his gun to shoot but in the hurry he broke the
gun and Knight escaped, finally arriving at Fort Mcintosh, on the Beaver
River June 22, 1782.   The last Indian massacre in Green Co. took place at
Whiteley on a Sunday morning May 12, 1782  when the McCarthy family were all
killed when on their way to church.    Crawford was burned at the stake by
the Indians at a place in the Valley of the Tamooche Creek June 10, 1782.
Among the volunteers on this expedition under Co. Crawford, were men by
the familiar names of John Smilie, James and John Collins, John Sherrard and
John Crawford, a son of the Colonel."

Crawford's Defeat ballad:
In seventeen hundred and eight two,
on the fourth day of May, as I tell it to you;
the [sic] crossed the Ohio, as we understand,
and bold Crawford gave them Command.

Their number four hundred eighty and nine,
and to take Sandusky Town, was their design.

Notes for ARCHIBALD "ARCHIE" CRAWFORD:

Served in the War of 1812 as sergeant under General William Henry Harrison when they defeated the
Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe at Lafayette, IN on November 7, 1811. Archibald was wounded by an
arrow in this battle. He continued to serve until he was mustered out of service in February 1814, when he
returned to Miller's Creek, Estill Co., KY. He was granted 20,000 acres of land in the Middle Fork River
area for his military services.

In the spring of 1815, he moved to Bear Creek to claim his land. His two brothers, Valentine and Gideon
helped him construct a two-room cabin. He owned 30 slaves. Some of his land grant is presently owned
by his descendants and the descendants of his slaves who took the name of Crawford.

Archibald was an eccentric. He built his own coffin and kept it filled with corn under the bed he slept in.
He took a notion to have his own funeral and invited friends and relatives. There was a two-hour eulogy
by the Rev. John Spencer. During the whole affair, Archibald sat in a chair at the head of the coffin which
he had pulled out from under his bed for the occasion.

From: Sharon Crawford;

Archibald Crawford, born March 9, 1772 in Culpeper Co. VA., was first found in Upper Howard Creek,
Clark Co. KY in 1796. He was also on a reconstructed 1800 census schedule compiled from lists of
taxpayers for the state of Kentucky in Clark County. Also shown living in Clark Co. was Austin Crawford,
and Valentine Crawford. Archibald married Margaret (Peggy) Brown Dec. 8, 1801 in Clark Co. KY,
Margaret was born January 6, 1789. In 1820 he was shown in the Estill Co. KY census with four males,
five females and five slaves. Archibald built a home near the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. In 1850
Breathitt Co KY Archibald at the age of 78 years old is shown as a widow. In his household there are
children who probably are his grandchildren. They are Anderson, Abner, and Margaret Bowman, and
Eviline and Nancy Spicer. Living several households down is Samuel and Rachel Plummer with daughter,
America, age 5 months old. America (Annie) Plummer grew up and married James S. Crawford. James
was the grandson of Archibald Crawford. In the 1860 Breathitt Co. KY census Archibald was living with
his son, Clabourn Crawford. Archibald died March 27, 1866 in Breathitt Co. KY. In 1870 Lee Co. was
form out of Breathitt, Owsley, Estill, and Wolf Counties and in the 1870 census this Crawford family was
found living in Lee Co. KY.
From Early Pioneers On The Three Forks Of The Kentucky River, written by Miles Crawford: Archibald
was a tall thin man nearly 6 and a half foot tall. He wore homespun woolen jeans and linen shirts all year
round. In his younger days he wore a long red beard and handlebar mustache. He carried a long scar on
his right cheek and neck from an arrow he received when he was shot by they Wyandott Indians in the
Battle of Tippecanoe with the Shawnee and Wyandott Indians in 1811 near the city of Lafayette, Indiana.
Archibald continued to serve with General Harrison in the Northwest Territory and was at the Battle of
the Thames in Oct. 1813. He was mustered out in February 1814, and returned to Millers Creek, Estill
Co.
Archibald came from Clark County to the mouth of Bear Creek about 1812. He built a long two room log
house and raised thirteen children. He brought thirty slaves with him. Archibald had been in the War of
1812 as a Sergeant in the Calvary and was granted 20,000 acres land bounty warrant. One ancestor said he
had so much land that he "didn't know where the boundaries were." It is know from tax lists and old
deeds that the boundaries were all the land between the waters of Bear Creek, Upper and Lower Twin
Creek. The 1800-1840 Estill and Breathitt Co. Tax list 20,000 acres of timber land. Most of the land was
inherited by his thirteen children and heirs down through the generations. Some has been sold to other
people, descendants of Archibald's original slaves still live on part of the original tract. They took the name
of Crawford and retain it to the present.
Archibald was a shoe cobbler of sorts, he made shoes from hides he had tanned and put the soles on with
dogwood pegs. About everywhere he traveled he always took along his two Jameson (large Kerr type
hunting dogs). At age 78 years, Archibald decides he wanted his funeral preached while he was still
living, word spread for several miles around about the event. He invited all that could get into the family
room of the house, he pulled a coffin made from black walnut whipsawed lumber from under a huge four
poster bed. The coffin was filled with seed corn and asked them to plant it in memory of the event. Rev.
John D. Spencer, a hard shelled Baptist, preached the funeral. Archibald told the crowd that his large four
poster bed meant more to him than anything else. He had handmade the bed as a wedding present for his
young wife in 1801, she was barely 12 years old when they married, and all of their 13 children were born
in that bed and when his time had come he wanted to die in it. Archibald died 16 years later.
The funeral was attended by James Green Trimble who wrote an account of the event and published in
the book, "Remembrances Of Breathitt County" published by The Jackson Times, Jackson, Breathitt
County, Kentucky.
